Thankfully we didn't have any children. She is either his 5 or 6 wife and is about 15 years older than her. I agree it is sad for her. That is very sad…but I do get the attraction. I left a really nice FA guy once for an NPD at work….that relationship (the first NPD) only lasted 4 months.

No…it isn’t just that…but I think trying to explain those differences may be lost on you since you are so eager to label those who have trauma based attachment issues as dysfunctional. It IS dysfunctional. Or else avoidants would not have any issues with any relationships from friendships to romantic relationships. And with avoidants with families of their own, you can only brand the family dynamic as "dysfunctional". I mean, at the end of the day, how can the hurtful, mentally abusive distancing behaviours of avoidants not be dysfunctional?? You still have not answered my question - was your NPD ex diagnosed by a professional?
