What are the effects of social isolation?
Can it damage a person? If so, how and what?
What is the impact it can affect the person's family and friends?
Can it create fear of other people?

Yes, complete isolation is often very damaging, both mentally and physically. For example, isolation can cause cardiovascular issues. Solitary confinement is one of the worst punishments you can put on someone. Humans are not meant to be solitary individuals. There's a lot of research on this topic, and plenty of information available if you do an internet search.

John Cacioppo's work on Loneliness will give you a good picture
He showed that you are 40% more likely to die prematurely if you suffer from loneliness (That's 15% more likely than if you are a heavy drinker)
