It seems that some people, no matter what is going on in the lives of people around them, can only focus on their own negative feelings and difficulty. Often, this mindset is fostered by a sense of entitlement, an inexplicable expectation that their own ideas, illusions, hopes, and feelings are of paramount importance and are in line with the way things and people "Should" be. It makes no difference if the people around them are as bruised and disappointed and hurting as they are, they will not see it. The tendency is to find fault with others, while justifying themselves for any mistakes, misunderstandings, or interpersonal failures they may encounter. I happened upon an article about self pity. It's a good read. Since those absorbed with self pity seem to possess little compassion for those around them, perhaps it's a good place to start to develop compassion and understanding for themselves as they seek to understand and correct their own self destructive narrative, which also happens to be destructive to those around them. lonerwolf.com/self-pity/
