My daughter, 20, has been in a monogamous relationship with a young man who identified as poly before they got involved, then swore he was monogamous when they began to date. Naturally.
This last weekend, after many months of monogamy and being deeply involved, he introduced the idea of moving toward polyamory, and wanted to know what she thought. I'm thankful he was responsible enough to have the conversation, although she was blindsided and is heartbroken.
She was struggling with a little denial, thinking she could "work this out", but ultimately she KNOWS that this is not right for her, so she broke up with him yesterday and now we (her family, her friends) are all closing in around her to support her healing. We will get her through this.
I'm just amazed at her ability to know, love and advocate for herself. She's so much further along than when I was her age... I was in the dark (completely!) about relationships and it took me a few decades to work it out to where I am now. I am thankful that this information is available for all of us, beyond thankful that our family evolution has my young adult children much more self aware and supported... I made it to middle age before I understood myself at all.
I've been able to provide my kids with the kind of support I desperately needed, but never received. I hate to see them suggest through their processes, but thankful to see them on the path of self awareness and healing.
Anyway, just wanted to share, because my mom heart just hurts for her, but I'm also grateful for the support that I've gotten here and elsewhere that enables me to support my kids through this stuff. It's not easy.
